The User Problem
For Sellers on eBay, we found that High ASP (Average Selling Price) items were being purchased through the Buy It Now feature—but payment was not being remitted within the 4 day grace period.
In order to mitigate this Unpaid Item scenario, my design team and I created the idea of a down payment on items over a specific price threshold.
Our Solution
In this experience, in order to Buy It Now, buyers would have to place a down payment to purchase this high ASP handbag. The hypothesis was that this nominal down payment amount relative to the item price would encourage buyers to fulfill their financial obligation.
Buy It Now
Once the down payment is processed, as before, buyer’s have a 4 day grace period to complete their checkout or they can go to checkout. However, in contrast to the previous iteration, they are now financially committed to the purchase.
Down payment processed
At this point, the buyer has elected to check out later. This gives them 4 days to complete the checkout process by paying their remaining balance.
Check out later
Either directly after paying their down payment or during the 4 day grace period, buyers return to this checkout screen to pay now.
